I haven’t seen butterflies for a long time. Suddenly though, in the past week, I saw two of them in odd ways.
The first one appeared while I was walking down an alley, something in the air caught my attention, I looked up and there was a butterfly flying like a bird very quickly to some destination. I say, flying like a bird, because usually a butterfly is flying close to flowers and flies in a fluttery type of way. This was so different.
The second one I saw today in the stairwell of my apartment building. I had to look twice, because I almost stepped on it. Sure enough, it was an orange looking butterfly. It was sitting with its wings closed. I looked to see if a window was open, nothing, so how did it make it in the building? If I wasn’t rushing, I would have tried to figure a way to put it outside again. The wings are so delicate, I was worried about this.
I did some research. I read that seeing a butterfly is important, because they signify transformation, personal growth and beauty.
What do you think? Is it normal to see butterflies in September when the weather is getting cold? Is there spiritual meaning behind this?
I see butterflies all the time!!!! I like to think they have a spiritual meaning. I always feel like when I see one, it’s because something good as happened.

Oh, that’s nice. I felt the same way OR like something good is “about” to happen. Thanks for sharing.

I have coneflowers planted in the garden. Butterflies, bees, wasps, dragonflies and yellow finches love them. While I am cautious of the bees and wasps I am thrilled to see the butterflies and the yellow finches. They are special to me and they provide a feeling of hope. Count yourself as blessed. 😊

Thanks, you are RIGHT, it did FEEL like HOPE as I saw each one. I like yellow finches too! It’s going to be a great week. 🙂

Isn’t if funny how a small creature can have a profound impact on our life? 🐦

Yes, I think it is because they are beautiful, extremely delicate, whimsical even. It’s nice to hear everyone’s stories too. I just told another blogger that I had visited the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Pacific Grove years ago, so many butterflies in the trees. Take a look: https://www.cityofpacificgrove.org/visiting/monarch-butterfly-sanctuary

I will take a look. I know in the past Brookfield Zoo had a butterfly exhibit with hundreds of butterflies. You could walk through and they would land on you. It was amazing. I will check out the link. Thanks,

Butterflies have a significance in my husband’s family, a sis-in-law was told that her mother would come to her as a purple butterfly (I’m aware some people may scoff, but if it offers comfort, I have no issues) and then my sis-in-law almost stepped on a purple butterfly on holiday in Italy. It kept fluttering by her. Twice I’ve been ‘visited’ by a purple butterfly (on my late mother-in-law’s birthday), I managed to get photos as it wouldn’t stop fluttering by me and so I couldn’t travel till it left, and last weekend, admittedly I was in a public garden and you’d expect to see butterflies, but even so, it was lovely to see it flutter by me.

I believe that loved ones can come to us in an animal form too. There is an Irish actress named, “Roma Downey,” who was in the TV miniseries called, “Touched by an Angel.” She said when she was young her mother died, she saw a butterfly and her father told her it was the mother. So, now overtime she sees a butterfly, she knows it is her mother and it brings comfort. They are BEAUTIFUL… and a purple one is rare, I always see orange ones, so I am sure it is your late mother/n/law visiting you! This warms my heart to hear this.

They are such beautiful creatures, but I have not heard about the spiritual meaning of seeing them…

Not sure if there’s a spiritual meaning there, but they certainly make me pause whenever I see them. Also, listen to Kacey Musgraves’ “Butterflies”. Great song!

The monarchs are migrating now from Canada to Mexico, so I have seen quite a few of them lately while driving…..after not seeing them for years! They are making a comeback here after being almost extinct, because people are planting milkweed in their gardens. (The townships used to spray the ditches for this invasive weed which explains why they almost disappeared). I also usually see regular white butterflies this time of year. I have heard there is a spiritual meaning to them, and they represent a touch with the afterlife, similar to cardinals. They always remind me of my dad, as he died in Sept and one of my last memories was of him wearing a warm sweater sitting outside under the crabapple tree with butterflies fluttering around him.

Thank you for your sharing and what a lovely story about your Dad! Years ago, I did visit the Monarch Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, CA. It was beautiful to see so many butterflies gathered around the trees. Here is a link: https://www.cityofpacificgrove.org/visiting/monarch-butterfly-sanctuary

Thanks! That would be amazing to visit. They seem to gather here in Point Pelee Park in southern Ontario before crossing the lake to the US, as I have been seeing quite a few lovely photos posted on the weather stations. I may include some in one of my Sept. blogs. if I ever get them done.

In Chinese culture, butterflies and particularly moths are closely associated with the souls of loved ones who have passed away. People believe that’s how they return for a visit. I believe it. Within the month of my father’s death, we saw a black swallowtail moth several times inside our house — once at my front door, another time in my living room and a third time inside my daughter’s room at night. In all the 10 years that we lived in that house, we had never seen such a moth before until then. And never again since. It happened also when my grandmother passed away over 30 years ago. So yes, I do think butterflies and moths can be associated wtth spirits, especially when they appear in such a way that demands your notice.

Thank you for sharing. Like you, when I saw this butterfly, I just knew and felt in my heart that it was my Italian grandmother… it’s a feeling we have… as you mentioned, that you just know it is a soul of a loved one. Your stories are lovely. By the way, how are your children book sales doing? The book you wrote with your mother?

Hihi! Apologies for my late reply. Thank you so much for your kind words. It’s assuring to know you have the same feelings about ‘knowing’. As with many of us, I am surrounded by sceptics, but I have encountered too many ‘coincidences’ that makes me a believer. Thanks for asking about my books. It is finally picking up momentum. I notice it seems to take about 1.5 years for it to start getting noticed. I will be releasing another one in November, about my mother’s war years, and am excited to see how that goes. 🙂 How is your writing journey?

Oh, that is exciting, a second book! I hope you will post about it, so we can see the cover. I’m working on several books in between my day job, so it takes a bit of time. I have submitted one to a few agents and received rejections, so fine tuning the stories and also making sure I am submitting to agents that would like the type of stories I am writing. As you know, it is a process. Excited to learn about your next book! 🙂

I think that when we are ‘In Tune With the Infinite,’ messages come to us in a variety of ways. When our soul says “Stop! Look into your heart right now… there is a message for you!” we should heed it. Often we may feel surrounded by the love of someone who has passed, or that we are being smiled upon for something that we have done or will receive. People say butterflies and ladybugs and rainbows incite these feelings, but I put no limit on the mode or method. I have asked for answers, or to locate misplaced items and have been somehow ‘directed’ or compelled to do something that leads me right to it. When these requests and responses ‘line up,’ I feel I am in the presence of something spiritual. I do not have to analyze it. I simply say, “Thank you.”

Yes, I agree with you. It’s interesting how when we focus our mind on different things, the Universe brings answers to us! I’ve just been listening to a book called, “When God Winks: The Power of Coincidence,” by Squire D. Rushnell. Have you heard of it. It’s full of many interesting stories. The audio is nice.
