A friend of mine recently traveled to Toronto. When she entered her hotel room, she walked into the bathroom and saw this big space behind the toilet.
We couldn’t make any sense of this. There are two railings on the wall. So, a handicapped bathroom? But why the big space behind the toilet?
Curious minds want to know…

I think the contractor made a booboo. It would be hard for anyone in a wheelchair to use the grab bars easily.

It’s for the new immigrants that actually stand / squat on the toilet seat to do their business! standard toilets are breaking because of this. they use the rear garb bar for this as well. A
Big baking company had to get rid of 20 workers because toilets breaking all the time because they would not sit. Crazy rituals, and of course our useless Prime minister encourages multi-cultures instead of becoming Canadians.

They bought the wrong size toilet is my guess

It looks like a design flaw, and waste of space.
Blessings to you!

I have no clue. However, I went to a restaurant’s bathroom with my daughter and it had two toilets side by side without the standard dividers and doors. My daughter and I laughed so hard!

Maybe to make it easier should repairs be required, (have you ever tried to get back there to fix something?)

There’s a reason the toilet OR the wall has to be exactly where it is and I’m guessing we’d know the answer if we could open up the wall or the floor. I’m guessing it has to do with the overall plumbing design, a mistake they couldn’t correct because the building was already constructed. A space for the dust bunnies to gather.

Very interesting article about bathroom design in Toronto. You might find my post about “Revitalizing you bathroom” interesting, I’m UK based and you might find some differences interesting. Please feel free to give it a read and use it for inspiration. http://bathrooms-kitchens.co.uk/2023/10/23/revitalizing-your-bathroom-a-comprehensive-guide/

Thanks for sharing. That bathroom design was in a Hotel, so not my design, more of an observation. I will visit your post. Thanks for the link.
