Winter has arrived… Time for knitting!

What do you do when your weather hits -1 degrees? The weatherman says if we are out for more than 10 minutes, we can get frost bitten. We don’t believe him/her. So, we bundle up (just in case, they’re right) and head outside. We don’t last more than five minutes and we are back in the house.

As I was house bound, I wondered what to do. Ok, read a book, watch TV, call a friend, clean the house, writer extra blog posts (LOL)… you get the idea. I needed something different. The light bulb went off.

Where was all my extra yarn?

I found it after a good search. I decided I’d make a lap blanket. So, I’ve been happily knitting in the evenings. Inside a knitter’s mind.

Knit, knit, knit…REPEAT.                                         Next row.                                                  Knit, knit, knit… REPEAT.

It’s like we are in a trance. I’m using an Alpaca yarn, it’s very lush and warm. Perfect for cold weather.

While I’ve been knitting, I started listening to The Boys in the Boat, by Daniel James Brown. The movie is out now, but usually the book is better. Isn’t the recommendation to always read the book first?

Has anyone seen the movie yet? Would love to hear your review.

  1. Winter has arrived on Ireland’s West coast too with sub-zero temperatures and plenty of snow!

I firmly believe that you should always read the book before watching its screen adaption. Movies can show a character’s actions, and particularly talented actors are great at showing emotion but screen adaptations often lack in depicting thoughts and reasoning.

Also – often the screen adaptations are but the tip of the iceberg of what the book contains. Movies, in particular, have to cut down backstory and in some cases, this can be very confusing for those who haven’t read the book before. Hence, reading the book before makes sense.

While I haven’t been to Chicago, I watched all ten seasons of Shameless and loved seeing glimpses of the beautiful city through the seasons. Winter was my favourite. Have a good winter day 🙂 Aiva xx

  2. Our inside time is summer because it’s too hot to be outside. I’ll have to remember to get my knitting out. I read “The Boys in the Boat” and enjoyed for two main reasons. I am third generation University of Washington grad and grew up in the state. Second, my DIL siblings all rowed in college on scholarship and my son began rowing a few years ago.

  3. The cold weather has driven my wife and I indoors. Mostly we’re doing quilting projects at the moment. The movie, “The Boys in the Boat” is on our list of things to go see soon. I think Heather has put in a hold request for the book from the library.

      1. Here at our library they tend to have just one or two physical copies of a book, but often have many more digital ones. I know my wife will hurry to finish reading a book if others are waiting to read it – like the members of her book group.

  4. Yours is the third recommendation for “The Boys in the Boat” and the movie trailer looks good. But I think I’ll give the book a try first. Like “Seabiscuit”, “Unbroken”, and so many others, I’m glad I read the book before I saw the movie.
