Did you know that Pop-Tarts were created in 1963? They were originally called, “Fruit Scones.” This name didn’t seem to fit, so they were renamed, “Pop-Tarts” after the Pop culture at the time. However, I had a funny thought, “POP-out-of-the-toaster” might have played into the name too.
William “Bill” Post, who invented Pop-Tarts 60 years ago, passed away at 96 in Grand Rapids, Michigan on February 10, 2024. Here’s where it gets tricky. News articles say that Post invented Pop-Tarts, but when I went to the Pop-Tarts website, it doesn’t mention his name at all. That’s sad, right.
Well, Netflix is coming out with a film on May 3rd, “Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story” directed by and starring comedian Jerry Seinfeld. This has to be good with Seinfeld. I look forward to the film to better understand “who” invented the Pop-Tart!

I loved Pop Tarts as a kid but have not had them for a long time. Post cereals product was called Fruit Squares, but they announced it was coming, months before it was ready and Kelloggs was able to beat them to the punch. They hired Bill Post from Keebler to develop it. This was on the show, The Foods That Built America. Hard to picture the cereal industry involved in espionage. I will look forward to Seinfeld’s film. Have a great evening. Allan

Thanks for sharing. I think in the movie they will show the rivalry between Post/Kellogg. Should be good with Seinfeld.

Sad news – another icon of my childhood gone.
We rarely got pop-tarts when I was a kid, but as an adult, I bought them all the time.
Well, until my doctor suggested it might not be the healthiest food to eat … sigh …

LOL – what do Dr’s know (just kidding). We didn’t eat them as kids either. When I got older I had them occasionally, not often. It’s a product we grew up with. Look forward to the movie.

One company I worked at used to stock them as snacks in the lunchroom … I loved working there …

When new neighbours arrived from Iowa they introduced my family to Pop Tarts. Haven’t seen any in our supermarkets for yonks. I will have to go sleuthing.

I didn’t eat them as a child, but it’s something we ALL knew about like Oreos, Cheerios, Coke, etc.

These are still an occasional guilty pleasure of mine! I was in trouble when they started offering a big box of blueberry and cherry varieties at my local Costco, because those are my two top choices! But then I was saved when they removed the cherry and replaced it with strawberry – I am no longer tempted so badly.
I look forward to the Netflix show!

LOL – Costco gets us every time. Yes, the movie should be good. I haven’t seen Seinfeld for so long, look forward to seeing him in the show.

People don’t know much about these things because (quite frankly) they don’t really care where it comes from, if they like it – they like it, and if they don’t… well, there’s a place for that, too.
What would really bake your noodle is if you research Kellogg. Now, there’s something you would have never seen coming.
There’s wonder upon wonder, and all one has to do is look beyond the curtain.
What’s the truth, though?
That’s much harder to figure out.

It is interesting to learn about how “things” are invented.

I didn’t know that pop tarts was that old. I actually never had one before. Perhaps I will have one watching the film when it comes out 🙂

Good idea! They are OK. Some people absolutely love them. I’ve only had them a few times.

I like the origin of the name (and I never would’ve guessed it). The number of flavors these days is mind-boggling, but my preference is still with one of the originals: frosted brown-sugar cinnamon. Not a healthy choice by any means but I’m glad they’re still going strong!

Seinfeld is directing and starring in a film about Pop-Tarts? Who’d have thunk it?

After years of getting them in my lunch.. I am ok without having another one again in my life! Still sorry to hear that all the same.
