The EDIBLE * Snowman *

You’ve probably seen the snowman in hot chocolate drinks. This was very cute and funny.

But… Have you ever eaten a snowman pizza? In all these years, this is the first I heard of this.

Then there are pancakes…

Apples… Can I take one?

I was walking in a Chicago neighborhood, looking at the homes, listening to the birds.

When right in front of me was an apple tree, handing over the sidewalk.

Of course, I wanted to take one. I mean it was right there in front of me, but…

I thought of that scene in The Wizard of Oz, when the trees come alive, see clip from YouTube.

So, I merely admired the apple tree and walked on.

Such a FUN walk!

Why did you get divorced?

Ok, I think we all need a good chuckle on this Friday afternoon. I was at the store recently and I saw these hamburger pillows. They are so funny. Why?

It’s part of the reason I got divorced many years ago.

When my eight year old daughter was asked why her parents divorced. She said, “Because my dad ate too many hamburgers and didn’t talk enough.”

Ok… that’s how I had explained it to my children when they were little. I gave an example of their friends from school and reasons why they didn’t get along with their friends, which was similar.

So, when I saw this stack of hamburgers it brought back funny memories.

GUESS WHAT my ex/husband is getting for Father’s Day! YES, his very own hamburger pillow. He will laugh, it’s been a joke of ours for years now.

We can always find humor in challenging situations.

Happy Father’s Day… soon… I’m ready!

Food: Eating berries are good for us, but…

Ok, I hope I don’t make too many people cringe by saying this, but every time I eat a blackberry, they remind of ants. YES, they look like a group of ants in my mind.

Blackberries are a strange fruit, so many little black balls that pop in your mouth. We had a blackberry tree where I grew up. It was glorious to pick blackberries daily and just munch on them non-stop, fingers turning purple. Of course, there was a mad dash to get to the tree first before siblings / friends ate them.

You probably won’t look at blackberries the same now.

I’m off to eat some more…

Valentine’s Day… Almost here!

I know everything is about the Super Bowl right now, but Valentine’s Day is next week. I was at Costco and saw these ravioli hearts. I loved them. They cook in 4 minutes, a lovely dinner ready so fast. PERFECT!

It’s not all about chocolates and roses, right. Look at these cute macarons.

So, while you are out shopping for Super Bowl snacks, you might want to add a Valentine purchase to your cart. Better to be ready, waiting for the last minute, it’s never a good idea.

Enjoy the weekend!

Baking – Madeleine attempts…

January is the perfect time to bake. For Christmas, my daughter gave me a madeleine pan. I was excited to make them. Sadly, after two failed batches, I’ve given up, not forever, but for now.

If you know madeleines, you can tell from the photo that they aren’t right. I can hear the Chef’s critique now as he/she bangs the madeleine on the table and breaks it in half. Good, you got the hump, but they didn’t rise properly, too dense and too brown on the edges, turn the heat down. TRY AGAIN!

There are so many recipes out there, it was hard to choose one. For the first batch, I went with Martha Stewart’s recipe. As madeleines are tricky, I thought Martha’s recipe would be full proof. Maybe it is, but not for me, I got a fail!

I then tried “another” recipe. I don’t remember which one, I randomly chose one. Again, somewhat similar to this batch. This makes me think that “maybe” I’m not whipping the eggs/sugar enough. BUT I feel PROUD of myself for getting the hump. That’s a big deal with a madeleines. You have to have the hump!

If you haven’t tasted a madeleine. they are a nice cookie type cake. There is debate on what they are called. They are like individual cookies; however, the texture is clearly a cake.

So, stay tuned. I am determined to get them right. Maybe I’ll try again next week. It’s just painful in this tough economy (groceries so expensive) to waste ingredients, but baking takes practice.

Cheers to getting it right the NEXT time!

Multi-can opener… It works!

Why did I wait so long to get this? Actually, I didn’t even know this multi-opener existed. For the past few years, I’ve found myself having trouble opening certain jars.

In fact, I was just at my daughter’s house and she could not open a small jar of garlic sauce. If I had known, I would have brought my new multi-purpose gadget. Instead, we spent a good 15 minutes, doing everything possible to get the glass jar open. We did finally do it, but it wasn’t fun!

I found this multi-opener by accident. It was on a sale rack.

My first thought was, “Wow, this is cool!” My second thought was, “Do you need to spend money?” My third thought was, “It’s on SALE, heck yes, opening cans will be easier.”

The red gadget is self explanatory. However, that grey one in the middle was a bit puzzling. I Googled it to see how it worked. Sure enough, there was a video that showed the six different ways to use it. How great!

I tried using it to open a tuna can that had the metal ring on top. You know, where you pull up on the metal ring to open the can. Unfortunately, user error, I ended up pulling the metal tab off. Obviously, I need to practice. So, I had to use a can opener to open the tuna can. I’m determined to do it right next time.

I highly recommend this type of product. I’m sure they have other brands, choose one. It’s for ALL ages. Even my daughter needed it the other day.

Guess what she is getting for her birthday?! She will thank me!

Coincidences… The Universe KNOWS what we want!

The other day, I had to run errands. Get my new crown put in. My gosh, it’s so expensive, I do feel it’s like a piece of jewelry in my mouth, I need to treat it with care. Then the DMV sent me a notice, go for Emissions Check on the car. That’s always stressful. If the car doesn’t pass, go to repair shop. Luckily, my car passed.

I was so busy that it was 3 pm and I had not eaten anything. It was a hot day, in the high 80s, so I wasn’t hungry, but I was really really thirsty. I had a vision of a Starbuck’s Mocha Frappuccino. That’s what I wanted. However, no Starbucks close by.

I decided to stop at Barnes & Noble. I always enjoy browsing the books, puzzles, journals, and magazines. I must have been there about an hour, time flies when we look at books. Suddenly, a lady came by with drink samples from the cafe. GUESS WHAT – she said they were Mocha Frappuccino samples.

I’m still laughing at the coincidence of this encounter. I was lost in a book, minding my business when the cafe lady approached. Of course, I took a sample. Then I smiled and thought, how nice of my Guardian Angel to surprise me like this. Team work. Sometimes a small sample is all we need.

The authors from the book, “The Secret,” would say I perfectly manifested my drink.

You know what, I would agree with them. Now, if I could just manifest winning the lottery.

Salmon… Do I need to eat it?

Recently, I had my annual check up. I heard the dreaded words, “Your cholesterol is high.” I’ve had this situation in the past, so I started researching online how to change my diet.

Salmon always comes up, so beneficial for our health in so many ways. BUT, I don’t like the fishy taste.

So, feeling like a little kid, I thought about how I could change the flavor. I decided to cut the salmon up in cubes, then marinated it in Teriyaki sauce. I’ve always cooked salmon with a little bit of garlic salt on it. Why not try something different. The result is in the photo.

Is the flavor better? Ah, a little, but still very fishy tasting, but more tolerable.

I always find it interesting when going out for dinner with people and they BRAG that salmon is on the menu as if it is the greatest thing to man kind. I tend to prefer white fish or shell fish. I feel like an outsider when they all order salmon and I say, “I don’t really like it.” You should see the horror on their faces!

Then, I remember years ago when I was used to eating white bread. That’s all we had as children. Slowly, I moved to eating healthier breads. First wheat bread, then multi-grain bread, etc. Now, I couldn’t even eat white bread unless it is sourdough bread.

So, won’t the same thing happen with salmon if I keep eating it? I’ll grow to like it???

Have a restful holiday weekend!!

Chicago’s BEST bagels – Corey’s NYC Bagel Deli

This weekend after canoeing, I was hungry. I was thinking, “What do I want to eat?” Then I spotted this van marketing bagels. I have to say, the advertising worked, suddenly I wanted a bagel.

Imagine my happy surprise, when I went to their website, to find out they are Chicago based. Corey’s NYC Bagel Deli was established by Corey & Laurie Kaplan (husband/wife team) in 2000.

From their site, I see they make great bagel sandwiches.

Looks like Marcus Lemonis from “The Profit” visited Corey/Laurie to see their business and offer advice/a deal for moving forward. Here’s a clip from the show.

Recently, they lost business as a few stores they supplied bagels/cream cheese to closed down. So, after canoeing I have a new place to visit. They need community support.

By the way, fellow Blogger, “Yeah, Another Blogger,” wrote a post about art on wheels. He found some interesting companies advertising in Philadelphia, PA. I loved the “Tea Around Town” bus.

So, when you walk, don’t look down/text on your phone, you might miss a great advertising van!
