Chicago… Hot dogs… Heinz Ketchup

Did you hear this in the news recently? Chicago and Heinz ketchup at war. Well, not really, but here is what is funny. I live in Chicago and I did not know that Chicagoans look down on people who put ketchup on their hot dogs. Yes, once you turn 18, no more ketchup. You are an adult now (so funny).

Recently, Heinz was in town. They put up a ketchup dispensing billboard outside the Weiner stand, allowing people to get ketchup packets for their hot dogs. I “think” people would be too embarrassed to use ketchup on the hot dog, but would use them on the fries. A funny marketing idea and it gets us thinking about Heinz ketchup – Brilliant!

I started to investigate further. Did you know there is site for “Hot Dog Etiquette,” from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council. They teach the Dos/Don’ts of hot dog eating. It’s very amusing. Here are a few to make you chuckle, common sense, you’ll enjoy the video.

Don’t eat hot dog on china, always on paper plate. No wine with a hot dog, only beer. No cloth napkin, only paper one. Only 5 bites to eat your hot dog…. WATCH the video for more tips BEFORE coming to Chicago.

So, the BIG question to ALL of you is this…

Do YOU use ketchup on your hot dog? Shhhh… I do, if there are no other condiments around.

  1. I remember a lot of childhood get-togethers with family and friends, and barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers were the go-to entrees. The condiments were set out in one place to help yourself, so I never made a distinction between what went on the dog versus the burger. It wasn’t until “adult” years when I learned about Chicago (and other) versions of hot dogs. All those toppings don’t really appeal to me – would rather just have mine with mustard and/or ketchup. We have a new hot dog place about to open in our town so it’ll be interesting to see whether ketchup is offered as a condiment. I’m guessing no 🙂

  2. Sorry, I LOVE ketchup. I used to work for a guy who made Chicago Style hot dogs using Vienna sausages, bright green relish and the whole works. Hated ’em. Ketchup is for me.

  3. Ketchup is for mixing with mayo to eat fries. Mustard is for hamburgers. Mustard and sweet pickle relish is for hot dogs and take small bites so you can savor it and not choke on it.

    1. Judy, interesting. Yet another take on ketchup. I’ve never mixed it with mayo for fries. I would have the combination with mustard on my hamburger. Oh, I agree, savor the pickle relish on the hot dogs. I also like chili dogs.

  4. Poor ketchup can’t catch a break! The Chicago hot dog police say no to the stuff on hot dogs, and I once read of a burger czar somewhere who wants to outlaw it on burgers too. I meet them in the middle – ketchup (but no mustard) on burgers and mustard (but no ketchup) on hot dogs.

Actually, hot dogs really need chili to complete them.

    1. LOL, I like chili on hot dogs too. My mother never made hot dogs with chili, so I must have had it with friends of maybe it was in College at football games. I haven’t had that for a long time. Summer is coming, perfect time for chili dogs.

  5. Interesting and funny! I have to admit yes I use tomato sauce on hot dogs, but I do prefer Daddies Brown sauce and mustard👍👍👍, the prefect combo. But I am from the UK so I am guessing our etiquette is quite different! Kind regards…Jay😊

      1. No worries my friend✌️. Ah…Brown sauce is quite a thing over here in the UK, It is my go to sauce, it is quite tart and spicy, I think vinegar is a big constituent. A must on an English breakfast😊👌, and good on those Hot Dogs! Yes it is, that is something intriguing about blogging; it can be a good teacher of different cultural norms. Have a great day!…best, Jay😊
