When a puzzle design goes wrong…

I’ve wanted to try this Ravensburger puzzle, Title: Colors on Colors, designed by Karen Puzzles for a while. It looked fun. However, I didn’t want to pay $24.99 for it.

Months have gone by, and I was at the thrift store and “there it was!” I got excited, but then my heart sank. The box was not taped closed. So, we know what that means… most likely pieces had fallen out.

Still, I had wanted it and for $1.99, it was worth a try.

From the get go, there were no end pieces. Not one. Were they lost or was that the design?

I continued… I was NOT enjoying this puzzle. It took me a while to figure out why.

Look at the photo below. The puzzle design from the box shows the distinct design of each puzzle piece. So, of course, we imagine that’s how “we” would be piecing the puzzle together.

Well, the designer did not think this through. The manufacturer put the puzzle cutting grid above the design. The result was a big mess, making this puzzle feel like your eye sight was out of focus. Definitely not like the design photo on the box.

At any rate, these things happen. I was glad I didn’t pay $24.99 for it.

I was amused at how many pieces were missing. I still think this “could have been” a FUN puzzle.

Glad I found it. Glad I did it.

Now, on to the next NEW puzzle find!

    1. It’s because puzzle manufactures have a cutting grid that they put on top of the illustration or photo, etc. They could not cut the puzzle pieces the way they look in the photo. That was the miss with the designer. If she had done a small sample, she would have seen that this wouldn’t work. Does that make sense?

      1. Wow, wooden puzzles. Thank you for sharing the link. They are really beautiful. I love those shapes, a buffalo, a bird, sailboat. What a fun job! Now that we have the tariffs, it’s becoming harder to order puzzles from Canada. You have a lot of great puzzle companies and then some carry European puzzle brands. Nice, different from our American puzzle images. I like them.

  1. The colours are very pretty and the design is cool, but it would most likely take some time to put it together. Buying puzzles at a charity shop is a hit or miss experience because it’s a gamble on whether all the pieces are included (even if the box is taped), but given you pay very little for it, it’s worth a try. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Yes, I think it’s worth it. It’s a FUN game to see “if” all the pieces are there. I have to say, I enjoy that. I do sigh if I like the puzzle and a piece is missing, I admit it. It’s hit or miss.

  2. I would not have the patience for that…..and no end pieces? Sometimes when my mom and I were done with a puzzle we would separate out all the end pieces for the next person, and put them in a separate ziplock bag, so maybe that’s what happened?

  3. Wow, a puzzle of a puzzle where the real pieces don’t match up with the pictured pieces. Perhaps this was done with evil intent. Like the solid red puzzle I bought my grandma for Christmas one year a long time ago.

  4. I almost thought the offset puzzle grid was intentional, until I read your reply to Amusives. Good on you for giving it a try, even with the missing pieces and eye-bending lines. As for me, I need more “action” in my puzzles besides strips of color. I’m the guy who gets annoyed with the 10% of my puzzle representing blue sky. Still, puzzles like yours are popular enough else they’d never be made. Good job on waiting for the “sale price” 🙂

    1. I used to be like you. Only want to do specific puzzles, but since I have been doing a lot lately. I’ve broadened my view and have been trying all sorts of designs… EXCEPT for brown themed designs. That gets me down. Bright colors are for me.
