I was looking at the pumpkins and came across these. I have to be honest, they look like they have a lot of warts on them. I don’t find them appealing and feel bad for saying this. Everything has it’s own beauty, right. Still, I thought, there must be a reason they grow like this.
Anyone familiar with these types of pumpkins?

They’re actually bred that way. Pumpkins, apparently, were warty before they were bred to be smooth. However, they can also be a sign of a mosaic infection spread by aphids, according to Gardening Know How.

Thanks, Judy. You are right. I went online, read more about them. It’s become popular to buy warty pumpkins. They are grown in Holland, MI. I would never have known. Oh, and you can eat them too. Happy Fall… Happy Halloween!

Aren’t they gourds?

I don’t think so. They are a warty pumpkin. There was a name for them. I read about them the other day, forgot the name already.

We are in Chicago, Holland, MI makes them, so maybe that’s why we have bins of HUGE ones.

We bought four pumpkins from the market this year for our front steps, including a little white one, a blackish one, and one looking a little like your warty example. The variety is kind of nice, instead of a typical display of the smooth orange ones.

Agree, I was at the Apple Festival today and there was a HUGE, I mean HUGE container of all sorts of gourds. They do look nice, so many colors and shapes.

It is hard to choose a warty one, when there are so many smooth, perfect looking ones to choose from. Still, I like the idea of loving the no so perfect ones.
Happy pumpkin season to you! Blessings!

Speaking of pumpkins, have you ever had pumpkin beer? I’m not crazy about it.

No, I haven’t. Gee… everything pumpkin, drinks, cakes, donuts. I just don’t like pumpkin, not even a slice of pumpkin pie. I’d go for pecan pie or lemon meringue or key lime pie, all time favorites.

Halloween is taking off in Australia and yesterday I walked into the supermarket and was confronted by just what you have photographed. I was taken aback at their warty-ness! A sort of ugly/not ugly thing going on 🎃 G.

I know! LOL – I mean, Halloween is supposed to be spooky, scary, but I’m still not drawn to the warty pumpkins. Maybe they will grow on me as there are so many of them this year. 👻 I have a friend from College whose birthday is on Halloween. She’s 60, says she still enjoys Halloween stuff. 😉
