Alaskan Cruise – View of Dawes Glacier

I just went on an Alaskan Cruise which brought us to Dawes Glacier. I always wondered what the glacier looked like up front. Surprisingly, it’s not white, or surrounded by water. Instead, it was nestled in this cove. It had beautiful blue crystal. I have a close up of a small piece that had broken off.

There were two tour boats following us, special excursion to bring people closer to the glacier. We saw some harbor seals, but I wasn’t quick enough to get a photo. Also, some people saw whales, I saw their spouts, but did not see their tails as they dove in, darn.

Alaska is beautiful, full of outdoor activities.

The most amazing part — BREATHING FRESH AIR! Really wonderful.

I’m envious of your trip to Alaska Monica – it has always been on my bucket list and I’m reading and hearing that years from now, so much melting will be occurring that the Alaska experience will not be the same. I am surprised by how the glacier looks as well – I’d have not thought it was blue!

    1. If it’s on your bucket list – DO IT! It was a relaxing and beautiful cruise. Not one person I’ve spoken to who has gone on the cruise complained. When you stop at different ports, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, they are tourist towns. All the shops have touristy things. What was fun was seeing whale sightings, the harbor seals, the beautiful mountains, being on the water. Fresh fish and crab. They have different excursions you can take. When we stopped at different ports… there would be FIVE other cruise ships there. You can leave out of Seattle or Vancouver. Do it. A fellow at one of the ports said, Cruises go from April (I think) to October. I was on the Celebrity Edge.

      1. I always traveled alone when I was younger. Back in 1981 I went on two-week Greece trip, a tour of Greece, then a one-week cruise where we went to different Greek Islands and also one-day ports of call to Egypt and Turkey. I decided cruises were the way to go … you unpack once, no toting stuff around and lots of fun. So the following year I wanted to go on another cruise – couldn’t decide between the Panama Canal (2 weeks) or Alaska (10 days I believe). I took the Panama Canal cruise and was sorry I didn’t choose Alaska, as we were “at sea” for 7 or 8 days of the cruise and it was really, really hot even though it was the last two weeks of October. We did see some unique sights, but I wish I’d gone with Alaska. It sounds great and the time to go is before a lot of that beauty melts away.

  6. People come away from cruises with different perspectives, but I have NEVER heard anyone complain about their Alaska cruise. It looks like a wonderful adventure, and your pictures are gorgeous!
